Clayton Motorcyclist Killed In Crash; Responding Officer Hurt In Second Wreck

CLAYTON — A motorcyclist was killed and a police officer was injured Saturday afternoon in separate crashes on Amelia Church Road, according to Clayton Police Chief Greg Tart.

Chief Tart said officers responded around 1 p.m. to a crash involving a motorcycle near Springwood Place. Witnesses told investigators that the motorcyclist, identified as Alex Kenneth Arble, 31, of Clayton, was traveling north on Amelia Church Road near Clayton Community Park when his 2009 Harley-Davidson struck the rear of a 2014 Jeep Cherokee.

The impact threw Arble from the motorcycle into oncoming traffic, where he was struck by a southbound 2018 Jeep Wrangler, police said.

Bystanders performed CPR before emergency responders from Johnston County EMS and Clayton Fire Department arrived, but Arble was pronounced dead at the scene.

The roadway was shut down as Clayton Police’s Patrol and Traffic Units investigated. The crash remains under investigation, and no charges have been filed.

While responding to the scene, a Clayton Police officer was involved in a separate collision at the intersection of Amelia Church Road and Veterans Parkway. The officer was taken to Johnston Medical Center in Clayton. No other injuries were reported in that incident.

The State Highway Patrol was called to investigate the crash involving the police vehicle.
