CLAYTON – The Town of Clayton has announced the hiring of Barry Alston as the new Building Inspections Director.
Alston is responsible for leading a department that analyzes building construction plans, approves building permits, and conducts compliance inspections to make sure all construction-related activities are in line with North Carolina’s current building codes.
“In all the progress happening in Clayton, the Inspections Department plays a crucial role,” said Alston. “I anticipate our Town maintaining its status as one of the premier communities to live, work, and play – not only in Johnston County but the State of North Carolina.”
Over the last year, Alston has become more familiar with the department’s operations and structure. He served as the Town’s Building Codes Plan Reviewer in April 2023 before assuming duties as Interim Inspections Director in December 2023.
“Barry’s dedication, expertise, and leadership during his time as interim director have been instrumental in maintaining the high standards of our Inspections Department,” said Deputy Town Manager Lee Barbee. “His wealth of knowledge and experience will undoubtedly contribute to the continued success and growth of the department.”
With Level III inspection certifications as a standard building, electrical, fire, mechanical, and plumbing, Alston has held numerous positions during his more than 15-year career with the City of Raleigh, including Code Compliance Officer and Deputy Fire Marshal.
Being an alumnus of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, Alston holds a Master of Science in Construction Management and a Bachelor of Science in Graphic Communications. As for what drew him down this career path initially, Alston said, “The mysterious nature of the field. It’s a very important job that most people have no clue about. One of my primary goals as director is to educate the public on what the Inspections Department is and does.”
Alston, who officially started his new role on April 6, shared he is excited to continue his work with the Town, citing the culture and people as the best parts about the job.
“I have every confidence that under Barry’s leadership, our Inspections Department will thrive,” said Barbee.
Let’s make sure we are hiring people that hold builders accountable.
