Clayton’s Ty Cummings Drafted By Seattle Mariners

BUIES CREEK – Ty Cummings was selected in the seventh round with the 217th overall pick in the MLB Draft by the Seattle Mariners Monday afternoon. Cummings is the second Camel off the board following Cade Kuehler last night.

The right-handed reliever was Campbell’s most-used bullpen arm over the last three seasons, making 74 total appearances, good for the sixth-most total appearances in program history. He logged 135 total strikeouts in 154.1 innings of work with a career 4.37 ERA.

This season, the junior held hitters to a career-low .212 batting average against him while striking out a career-high 52 in 54.1 innings. Among his best performances in 2023, Cummings worked five scoreless against Coastal Carolina, and tossed five no-hit innings in relief at UNC Asheville.

Cummings is the second Campbell reliever drafted in the last two years, with Ryan Chasse selected out of the Campbell bullpen in 2022 in the 17th round. The Clayton, N.C. native, and Corinth Holders High school graduate, is the third Camel to be drafted by Seattle, joining LaGrande Russell (1990), and Spencer Packard (2022).

Cummings is the 46th player from Campbell to be drafted, and the 14th under head coach Justin Haire. Of those players drafted, only seven have been selected higher than Cummings in the seventh round.
