Cleveland Senior Receives NAACP Scholarship

Cleveland High School Senior Alena Hargrove has been selected as the recipient of a 2018 Johnston County NAACP Scholarship.

The Johnston County NAACP provides financial assistance to deserving African American Seniors in pursuit of their future educational aspirations.  The mission of the NAACP is to ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of the rights of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and discrimination.

Alena is an active member of Cleveland High School and the surrounding community.  She is a member of the National Honor Society, president of the Cleveland High School Yarn Club, Vice President of her church youth ministry and participated in Cleveland High School’s AVID program.  Alena is also a member of the North Carolina Mathematics and Science Education Network Pre-College Program.  She has volunteered with numerous organizations in the community and also works part time as a Peer Tutor and with a catering company.

Alena plans to attend Winston Salem State University in the Fall to pursue a degree in Biochemistry or Bio-psychology.  Alena’s long term goal is to attend graduate school and teach at the University level.
