Commissioners Approve Parks, Greenways And Open Space Grants

Johnston County Commissioners have unanimously approved $808,742.75 in Parks, Greenways and Open Space Grants.  The money is from Johnston County’s Open Space Fund. A total of $1,714,910.86 had been requested.

Some of the recipients and projects include:

  • Clayton Little League, Neuse River Futbol Alliance and Riverwood Middle School – Field Improvements – $94,430.
  • Greater Cleveland Athletic Association – Repair or replace underground service to field lights – $57,044.54
  • Corinth Holders Community Recreation – Ballfield Lights – $85,500.00
  • Corinth Holders Community Recreation – Lighted Sign – $7,600.00
  • Corinth Holders Community Recreation – ADA Parking Compliance – $9,500.00
  • Town of Archer Lodge – Picnic Shelter and Installation – $79,230.00
  • Archer Lodge Community Center – Playground renovation, Fall Zone Material, Drainage and perimeter work – $79,230.00
  • Triangle Land Conservancy – River Walk Board Walk – $50,000
  • Johnston County Parks & Greenways & Open Space – Recreation Master Plan Update – $20,000.00
  • Town of Kenly – HVAC Replacement for gymnasium – $38,000.00
  • Town of Pine Level – Parking lot repairs – $13,337.00
  • Glendale-Chapel Community Center – Ballfield renovations / lighting – $25,128.00
  • Princeton Little Tarheel League – Bathroom ADA remodel – $36,988.25
  • Princeton Little Tarheel League – Field light retrofit to LED – $39,710.00
  • Princeton Little Tarheel League – Ballfield renovations – $9,796.00
  • Town of Selma Parks & Recreation – Creation of soccer field – $15,250.00
  • Town of Smithfield Parks & Recreation – Greenway Bridge – $13,300.00
  • Town of Wilson’s Mills – Dog Park – $37,244.00
  • Town of Benson – Add goals and bleachers to gymnasium – $28,906.00
  • Meadow Athletic Association – Sewer system lift station – $9,500.00
  • Meadow Athletic Association – Drainage and erosion – $19,739.00
  • Four Oaks Civitan – Soccer Field Construction – $14,620.00
  • Town of Four Oaks – Playground – $14,620.00
  • McGee’s Crossroads Athletic Association – Design documents for Community Park – $47,500.00
  • McGee’s Crossroads Athletic Association – Bleachers and batting cages – $28,500.00
  • McGee’s Crossroads Athletic Association – Outdoor recreation facility improvements / walking trail – $28,500.00

Other projects failed to receive funding, including a $400,000 request for land purchase by the Triangle Land Conservancy; $52,250 for tennis court renovations for the Town of Benson; $57,000 for a concession stand restroom for the Meadow Athletic Association; and $28,500 for a gym bleachers sound system for McGee’s Crossroads Athletic Association.

Due to COVID-19, many recreational organizations are seeing a decrease in finances.  Commissioners agreed to waive a 5 percent matching fund requirement to assist the agencies receiving the grants.

After all the grants are awarded, $531,908.25 will remain in the Open Space Fund.
