Commissioners Ask NCDOT To Name Bridge In Memory Of Tony Braswell

SMITHFIELD – Johnston County Commissioners have adopted a resolution requesting the NC Department of Transportation name the US Highway 70 Business East Bridge at the Peedin Street Extension in Pine Level in memory of Tony Braswell.

Braswell was elected in 2004 as a Johnston County Commissioner and served as Vice Chairman from 2013-2014 and Chairman from 2015-2016. He announced in August 2023 he would not seek reelection this year. He passed away on March 9, 2024 at the age of 79.

Commissioners forwarded their resolution to the NCDOT asking the bridge be named the Jimmy G. “Tony” Braswell Bridge.

  1. They should name the bridge, in honor of former police officer Johnny Littleton. Johnny was a dedicated police officer who past away from an illness in 2010. Johnny was an outstanding guy, who loved his town.

  2. I hope it happens. This would be a well deserved honor. Mr. Braswell served this county well. If for no other reason, he deserves this for the work he did for retired veterans. He worked tirelessly on their behalf. Matt, did you put forth any effort to get a bridge named after Officer Littleton? Go for it…there are other bridges. Put some effort behind your complaint.

  3. How ridiculous!!! There are plenty of soldiers/officers in Johnston County who deserve this honor far more than Mr. Braswell. In case politicians haven’t figured it out the American people are waking up. We see you and we don’t appreciate the way our country/county is being run. We also don’t think you deserve landmarks named after you.

  4. Sir, he was a soldier. And you should check into the work that he’s done for the veterans during his lifetime and continued to write up until his death. You may have a sour taste in your mouth about politicians but this man was more than a politician.
