Community Nonprofit Announces New Board, Invites Public To March Meeting

CLAYTON — Serve The Need in Johnston County has announced its newly elected executive board, which will lead the nonprofit’s humanitarian and community outreach efforts throughout 2026.

The Clayton-based organization provides support services to local residents through initiatives including ADA ramp construction, food distribution programs, teacher support efforts for Johnston County Public Schools, and fundraising events.

According to the organization, the new leadership team aims to expand collaboration among churches, civic groups and community partners while addressing growing needs across Johnston County.

Melissa Serrano will serve as president. Officials said her role will focus on strengthening partnerships and encouraging community involvement to support local service projects.

Simon Garren was named vice president and will help oversee operational strategy and organizational growth. Cheryl Oliver will serve as secretary, with responsibilities including communications and recordkeeping, while Tom Ricks will assume the role of treasurer, overseeing financial management and transparency.

“As Johnston County faces new challenges and opportunities, this leadership team brings compassion, local expertise and strategic vision,” Garren said in a statement.

Serrano said the organization aims to become a primary resource for residents seeking assistance by connecting them with available programs and support services.

Serve The Need holds general membership meetings on the first Thursday of each month at 10 a.m. Meetings take place at Horne Memorial United Methodist Church in Clayton. The public is invited to attend the next meeting scheduled for March 5.

Founded in 2009 by Clayton resident Norwood Williams, the nonprofit began by building accessibility ramps for veterans and has grown to include more than 200 members. Officials said the organization continues to seek volunteers, donors and community partners to support future projects.
