Congressman Wiley Nickel Will Not Seek Reelection To US House

Announces Campaign For US Senate In 2026 Amid Statewide Effort To Flip NC Blue In 2024

RALEIGH – Congressman Wiley Nickel (D-NC) announced today (Thursday) that he won’t file for re-election to Congress in 2024 and will launch a statewide effort to elect Democrats up and down the ballot to flip NC blue, fight to end partisan gerrymandering, and explore a path forward in the U.S. Senate.

Rep. Nickel represents the 13th Congressional District in the U.S. House, which includes Johnston County.

“Republicans have rigged the system to favor themselves and I don’t have a path to run for re-election in the 13th district. But I’m not giving up and neither should you,” said Congressman Wiley Nickel. “Next year, I’m going to be working to elect North Carolina Democrats up and down the ballot in 2024. Then, in January I’m going to look to flip our US Senate seat blue. Phil Berger and Legislative Republicans can’t gerrymander a statewide election.”

Nickel served in two White House administrations, including the Obama administration, served two terms in the NC State Senate, and worked as a defense attorney in North Carolina.

New congressional district maps would have made it difficult for Nickel to win reelection in 2024. As of Wednesday, 10 Republicans have filed for the 13th District seat. They include Josh McConkey of Holly Springs, Chris Baker of Zebulon, Eric Stevenson of Spring Lake, Kenny Xu of Raleigh, Brad Knott of Raleigh, Fred Von Canon of Wake Forest, Siddhanth Sharma of Garner, James Phillips of Lillington, Matt Shoemaker of Clayton, and Marcus Dellinger of Wendell.

The filing period remains open through 12 Noon on Friday, December 15, 2023.

  1. Why flip the state blue? The democrats have proven time and again at just about all levels that they have no idea what they are doing. Our economy is the worst its been in a long while which they say isn’t their fault but yet look at the governor and president. They broke it and have no idea how to fix it so they will ignore the problem till the people finally grab the pitchforks and torches and come after them. Which if they have their way pitchforks will be all we have to fight them with.

    • @Joe: Are you kidding? The stock market continues to hit all-time highs (I’ve made more money in the past year than yhe last 3 combined!), unemployment rate continues to be below 5%, home values (the largest asset for most Americans) continue to rise. You sound like a Snowflake that doesn’t understand how to make money.

      • TTT, you need to become a student of history. During the Weimer Republic, stocks soared because the currency was devalued. The measure of an economy is not stock prices, it’s the ratio of wages to goods. For example, is milk more than it was in 2019? Yes, by 33%. Is gas higher? Yes, by 58%. How do groceries get from the farm to the store? Trucks. What do trucks run on? Diesel.

This is a direct result of Congress having the Fed print all that money back in 2020 and 2021.

Our stocks are doing okay because the dollar is being debased.

Surely your pompousness can be humbled by this information…surely it can.

        • @Brett: During Weimer Republic, inflationary unemployment were both in the high teens and the German currency was a minor player on the world markets. Not even remotely the same as here, today. Company’s continue to post record profits, proving that the wages have grown — otherwise people wouldn’t be buying more than ever! Snowflakes like you who want more government intervention are THE PROBLEM. True Conservatives have been making money hand over fist for the past 10 years.
