WTSB News has learned that Smithfield Police are investigating a report a home repairman defrauded an elderly woman out of thousands of dollars last year.
A family member of the elderly victim filed a report with Smithfield Police last week stating the contractor was paid $75,000 for repair work at a Smithfield home. The contractor allegedly did only a small portion of the work then walked away, but kept all of the money.
Interim Police Chief Keith Powell said a detective has been assigned to investigate the incident which reportedly happened between July and November 2015 but was just reported last week.
The name of the contractor under investigation was not released by police.
