A Smithfield convenience store clerk sustained minor injuries after he was reportedly assaulted by a customer. The incident happened last Thursday night around 10:00pm inside the Star Market at 836 W. Market Street.
A 54 year-old clerk told police he noticed a customer inside the store was the same individual who had recently shoplifted a beer and left without paying. The clerk confronted the customer about the prior shoplifting incident. During the confrontation the clerk was punched in the face. The suspect fled on foot before police arrived.
The clerk sustained minor injuries but did not require hospitalization. No arrests have been made.
