The Harnett County NAACP is now contemplating how it will respond to the suspension of an officer who was videoed kicking a suspect in an incident in 2012.
Dunn Police Chief Chuck West suspended Lt. Cary Jackson one week without pay for her actions in the 2012 incident. The June 2012 video appears to show Lt. Jackson kick Seneca Jackson of Benson one time while he laid on the ground. Mr. Jackson was stopped in a traffic stop.
He then fled from officers and led them on a 2 to 3 mile chase before pulling off the road. It was at that point that former Dunn Officer Dallas Autry is shown in the video holding Mr. Jackson on the ground while Lt. Jackson kicked him.
Mr. Jackson was arrested following the incident and was charged with one felony count of fleeing to elude arrest, one misdemeanor count of reckless driving and one misdemeanor count of possession of marijuana.
Chief West issued his decision on Lt. Jackson’s punishment Thursday. Harnett County NAACP President Carolyn Mc-Dougal said Friday her organization is not ready to respond.
“I will meet with our executive board and then I will issue a response,” Mrs. McDougal said.
Chief West said the punishment was issued based on careful consideration of all the evidence in the case and Lt. Jackson’s record.
He said the move was to ensure Lt. Jackson’s “understanding of the policies and goals of the Dunn Police Department.” Story by The Daily Record
