Arden Julie Vessie, a recent graduate of Corinth Holders High School, has been announced as a recipient of the 2015 North Carolina State Fireman’s Association scholarship.
Vessie was presented with the $6,000 award on Monday in front of members of the Clayton Town Council by Clayton Fire Chief Lee Barbee. The scholarship is given to firefighters and children of firefighters for excellence in academic achievement, he said.
Vessie will be attending East Carolina University and has been accepted into the school’s Honors College where she will major in Biology and Spanish with future plans to attend medical school to become a doctor. The honors college is a special program at ECU where they admit about 110 students each year and they live and learn in a pre-established environment with each other with an emphasis on community and University service, personal and professional development, and academic and professional success and achievement.
Vessie was a seven time state medalist in Winter and Spring track as a distance runner at CHHS. She was recruited by many Division I schools to run on scholarship, including ECU, which she has declined for her studies.
