County Commissioners Adopt Resolution Supporting I-540 Southern Loop

Johnston County Commissioners went on record this month supporting the I-540 Southern Loop.

The Southern or Southeastern Extension, would extend the Triangle Expressway from the NC 55 Bypass in Apex to US 64 / US264 (I-495) in Knightdale, completing the 540 Outer Loop around the greater Raleigh area.

In the resolution adopted by the board on June 5th and signed by Chairman Jeff Carver, Commissioners said they believe the I-540 Southern Loop will have a positive impact on reducing traffic and improving safety on Highway 42, Highway 50, I-40 and Ten-Ten (Cleveland) Road.

The Southern Loop would also add infrastructure that would also support new development, new investment and expansion of the employment base, the resolution read.  Once completed, the resolution states the Southern Loop will support the continuing growth of all communities in Johnston County.

The Complete 540 project would link the towns of Apex, Cary, Clayton, Garner, Fuquay Varina, Holly Springs and Raleigh.   Construction would likely take place in three phases. The estimated current cost is $2.2 billion but will likely be refined.
