The Johnston County Board of Elections held an emergency meeting on Wednesday to participate in a statewide recount.  In response to a demand for a statewide recount in the NC State Auditors race, the State Board of Elections instructed all 100 of the county board of elections offices to conduct a machine recount for the contest.

Johnston County began recounting the ballots Wednesday afternoon at the Board of Elections Satellite Office on South Third Street in Smithfield.

Republican Chuck Stuber requested the recount in the race against Democrat incumbent Beth Wood.  Stuber trailed Wood by just under 6,000 votes statewide after the November 8th elections. In Johnston County, Stuber received 48,674 votes to 33,430 for Wood.

The statewide recount is projected to cost about $1.5 million.
