A former sandpit in southern Johnston County has been rezoned.

Charles Bryan Denning of Dunn received unanimous approval from Johnston County Commissioners to rezone 18.58 acres at 1144 Lee Johnson Road in the Meadow community from Industrial-Special Use to Agricultural Residential.  A permitted sandpit had at one time been operated on the site.

Denning said the sandpit has not been in operation in several years.  He wants to sell the land to a Johnston County family who plans to build house on the property.

During the March 2019 Planning Board meeting, two people expressed concern about the safety of the former sandpit. However, the board recommended approval of the rezoning application.

During the May 6th, County Commission meeting, Kenneth Smith who lives at 1141 Lee Johnson Road spoke during the public hearing.  Smith said he was concerned the land could be used as a trailer park. He said the area already has too many trailer parks and he doesn’t want another one near his home.

Mr. Denning reassured Mr. Smith there are no plans for a mobile home park, rather a family wants to buy the property and build a house.

Commissioners voted unanimously to approve the rezoning.
