FOUR OAKS – NC Department of Transportation crews made emergency repairs Monday to the Holt Lake Bridge on US Highway 301 after it was struck by a vehicle. The accident demolished a concrete bridge rail.
Four Oaks Police said Kevin Scott Rose, 30, of Dunn was operating a 2018 Chevrolet pickup northbound when he crossed the centerline, ran up on the bridge rail on the southbound side, slid about 30 feet on top of the rail, knocking down a section. His truck came to rest with the front of the vehicle dangling over the water.
Police said Rose was seen walking away from the 5:22am accident on US Highway 301. However, a relative of the driver who arrived on the scene a short time later claimed Rose had swam to their residence. Rose was located by police on Mariah Drive.
According to an accident report, several empty beer cans were ejected from the bed of the pickup and police believe alcohol may have played a factor. Rose claimed he swerved to avoid something in the roadway. He was cited by Officer A. Sarver with leaving the scene of an accident and failure to maintain lane control. He was not injured.
Damage to the bridge was estimated at $10,000. Damage to the Chevy truck was placed at $20,000.
NCDOT crews closed one travel lane on the bridge while temporary repairs were made. The bridge was fully reopened to traffic around Noon Monday.
Yet no field side sobriety test
Nope, that’s because in JoCo it’s OK to Drive Under the Influence. Especially if you’re a member of the good old boys network.
