Crazy About A Mercury: Car Found Submerged In Rural Pond

A landowner returned home Monday afternoon to find a partially submerged Mercury passenger car several hundred feet off the roadway and down a steep embankment in a pond on Antioch Church Road in northern Johnston County.

The Antioch Fire Department, Johnston County EMS, Johnston County Sheriff’s Office and NC Highway Patrol responded.   The Princeton Fire Department dive team was later called to recover the car and to help search for possible victims.  No victims were located and there were no injuries.

The license plate was missing from the Mercury, however, troopers were able to identify the owner by the vehicle identification number. The owner lived within about 5 miles of where the car was found.

The recovery process and investigation took several hours to complete.
