KENLY – If you recently filled up with gasoline at a Johnston County business you may want to pay close attention to your bank account. The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office confirmed a credit card skimming device was located December 8th on a fuel pump at the Kenly 95 Truck Stop at 923 Johnston Parkway Road.

Authorities said the device was found by the business and immediately removed and reported to law enforcement. The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office said the business was not at fault and the device was illegally placed inside a fuel pump.

The illegal skimmer works by stealing your credit and debit card information when you swipe your card at the pump. The skimmer copies the account data from the magnetic stripe on the back of the card, along with the PIN if it is a debit card transaction. It takes a thief less than 30 seconds to install a skimmer.

When you pull up to a fuel pump, authorities say you should look for a seal on the credit card reader door to make sure it has not been broken. If you are uncertain if the seal has been tampered with, go inside to use your credit card or pay with cash.

So far there have not been any reports of any stolen credit card information linked to this incident. Authorities don’t know how long the illegal skimmer had been inside the fuel pump.
