The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office announced today (Tuesday) that no charges would be filed against a grandmother who ran over her 2 year-old granddaughter who was playing in the backyard of her home Monday afternoon.
The tragic incident happened at 4:51pm at 3232 US Highway 70 Business East of Smithfield.
Two young children were at their grandparents home when the grandmother, Andrea Allen, left to run an errand. When she returned in her car, she pulled into the back yard with the vehicle. As she rounded the corner she did not see her 2 year-old granddaughter playing in the backyard. The child was struck by the vehicle and fatally injured.
In a press release today, Sheriff’s Captain Jeff Caldwell said, “Investigators determined the tragic event was in fact accidental and no charges will be filed.”
The name of the 2 year-old was not released by authorities. A previous article incorrectly identified the age of the child as 3.
