A Benson man said he was robbed after his car broke down on Interstate 40 near Highway 42 Tuesday night. The 21 year-old man was headed to work at a business at the I-40 / NC 42 interchange around 7:20pm when his car became disabled beside the eastbound lanes. The man began walking towards the intersection and just minutes later an SUV stopped. The occupants asked the man if they could help.
The victim said he offered the occupants in the SUV $10 to drive him to his employer. They agreed. But when the man pulled cash out of his pockets to pay the suspects, two of the 3 people in the SUV got out, physically beat the victim, and took his money and sped away. An undisclosed amount of cash was taken.
The victim managed to summon help. He was treated and released for minor injuries at the scene by a Johnston County EMS crew.
The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office said they are searching for a black 2007-08 Chevy Tahoe with three black male occupants. The vehicle was last seen traveling westbound on I-40 towards Wake County around 7:30pm Tuesday night.
Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information about the suspects is asked to contact sheriff’s detectives at 919-989-5000. Callers can remain anonymous.
