District Attorney Issues Statement In Quadruple Homicide Case

SMITHFIELD – Johnston County District Attorney Jason Waller released a statement Wednesday morning regarding the deaths of four children in northern Johnston County.

Wellington Delano Dickens III, 38, of 101 Springtooth Drive, Zebulon, was arrested Tuesday and charged with four counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of his three children — Leah Dickens, 6; Zoe Dickens, 9; and Wellington Dickens, 10 — and his 18-year-old stepson, Sean Brasfield.

District Attorney Waller issued the following statement:

Just before midnight on Monday, I received a call from Captain Don Pate of the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office and heard the words no District Attorney ever wants to hear ‘we have a death investigation involving children.”

Under the Rules of Professional Conduct, I am limited in what I can share about this ongoing investigation. However, as the District Attorney of Johnston County, and also as a father and a member of our community, my heart breaks for these children who have been subjected to violence and murder and for everyone who loves them.

Over the past two days, I have worked closely with Sheriff Steve Bizzell, Chief Deputy Jeff Caldwell, Captain Pate, and the men and women of the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office, along with Director Chip Hawley and the dedicated agents of the State Bureau of Investigation. Their tireless work in the face of such tragedy reflects the very best of law enforcement and the strength of interagency partnerships. Together, they are conducting a thorough and professional investigation to uncover the truth and to ensure accountability through the justice system. Thank you for putting these children and our community first.

As we continue to move forward, I join our entire community in mourning the loss of four innocent lives. The outpouring of love and support for these children has been overwhelming, and I want to assure you that those expressions of care and your calls for justice are being heard.

At this stage, the investigation remains active and ongoing. When the investigation is complete, my office will review the evidence carefully and proceed in accordance with the law and the facts. As a career prosecutor who has prosecuted both capital and non-capital murder cases, I understand the importance of patience and precision in this process. Justice is not achieved through haste but through diligence, integrity, and unwavering commitment to the truth.

The loss we face is unimaginable. The responsibility before us is great. And I can promise you this, I recognize the horror you are all experiencing hearing about this crime, and my office will honor the memory of these children by pursuing justice with strength, compassion, and respect for the rule of law.

  1. Poor babies, God rest their souls. I’ll never understand how somebody could extinguish their own children like that.

  2. Why make babies if all you are going to do is hurt them in the long run? There are people that can not have children that would give there life for a child. Then you have these sorry people taking there little life’s away like they are trash. All I have to say is the is a special place in hell for people like you.

  3. He had lost his wife earlier this year and I am sure he was grieving her loss but that is no reason to take the lives of your children. I am sure they were grieving her loss too. So sad for everyone. Praying for all evolved. 🙏

  4. This man dont deserve a trial he should automatically be put to death These 4 children deserve better he took their life his should. be taken I will never understand how someone could harm a child

    • We can sit here all day and judge this man. It is not our job to judge anyone. This is a mental issue on this man’s part. He was grieving the loss of his wife and grief can come in many forms, it doesn’t make it right, those poor children didn’t deserve this but mental issues can explain it better. I think a lot of people dropped the ball on this. Why didn’t the school check to see why the children were not in school. It should have been followed up on and they could have seen the mental state this man was in and could have protected the children. There are to many unanswered Questions. My heart breaks for these precious children but it also breaks for the father of these children. I am sure if he had been in his right frame of mind it would not have happened.

      • Mental health or not doesnt make up for what he did… IDC if you have mental health you kill someone you should too… no sense in keeping a mental person alive that is a murderer. Execute them and let Lord decide the judgement for eternity.

      • You’re right this man was not in his right frame of mind and someone should of followed up on the children as well
If he had of been he would not of killed them Very sad for all

  5. Do you think that Drugs and evil demonic spirit of death were involved? He and his wife had a history involving the family in Wake County.
