Dog Shot And Killed During July 4th Break-In

Law enforcement officers are asking for help trying to solve a July 4th break-in where a dog was shot and killed.

Smithfield Police said the break-in was reported on Flowers Street in West Smithfield.

The 56 year-old resident was out-of-town for the July 4th holiday and had someone coming over to check on their dog.  When the dog sitter arrived at 9:00PM Thursday they saw a suspicious burgundy car parked in the driveway. They called police but when officers arrived the vehicle had already left.

Police located a rear door to the Flowers Street home had been opened and three TV sets removed.  A small mixed breed dog inside the home had been shot to death.

Anyone who has any information about the break-in or burgundy vehicle is asked to contact Smithfield Police Detective Johnson at 919-934-2121 or the Smithfield Police Tip Line at 919-989-8835.  Callers may remain anonymous.
