N.C. Department of Transportation crews in Johnston, Nash, Wayne, Wilson, Edgecombe and Halifax counties are ready to deal with the upcoming round of winter weather. With most of North Carolina looking at the possibility of snow and ice, crews have equipment and supplies ready to go.
Earlier this week, maintenance crews in these counties began anti-icing operations, spreading brine along interstates and major routes such as I-95, I-40, US70, US 64 and US 264. Crews were continuing to brine primary routes Thursday. Brine is a 23 percent salt-and-water solution that helps prevent ice from bonding to the pavement.
Crews, supplies and equipment will be on standby and ready to respond as the storm moves into the area. Trucks are also being prepared to spread additional salt and sand and to plow snow.
