SMITHFIELD – A gas leak in Downtown Smithfield was contained Tuesday morning. Around 9:25am, the Smithfield Fire Department responded to the 100 block of N. Fifth Street.
As a precaution, N. Fifth Street was closed between Market Street and Bridge Street until Piedmont Natural Gas responded and capped the leak, according to Fire Chief Jeremey Daughtry.
Officials said the leak was caused by a construction crew doing work in the area.
