WILSON’S MILLS – A Thursday evening single-car crash on US 70, just west of Wilson’s Mills, led to the driver in handcuffs and transported to the Johnston County Detention Center.

A newer model Dodge Charger drifted to the right and slammed head-on into a steel guardrail end-cap.

The Department of Transportation highway safety device worked as it was designed and cushioned the sudden impact. The driver and passenger escaped serious injury but a witness reported seeing them leave the scene and run across the highway following the crash.

The pair ended up being located near Uzzle Industrial Drive where the driver was arrested and charged with DWI, hit and run and driving with a revoked license, among other offenses.

Westbound lanes of US 70 were briefly closed. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol investigated the accident.
