Driver Charged In Deadly I-95 Crash

SELMA – The State Highway Patrol has filed several charges against a Virginia motorist following a deadly crash on Interstate 95 near Selma. The collision happened October 20th at 5:33pm near US 70 (Exit 97).

Danial Ahmed, of Woodbridge, Virginia has been charged with felony death by motor vehicle, felony possession of cocaine, driving while impaired, driving after consuming under age 21, and possession of drug paraphernalia. The crash occurred five days before his 21st birthday.

Troopers said Ahmed was operating a 2005 Honda northbound, at an estimated original travel speed of 75 miles per hour, when he ran off the interstate to the right and struck a tree. A rear seat passenger, Delondre Ashan Freeman, 25, of Woodbridge, Virginia died at the scene.

Ahmen and a front seat passenger, Brenna Cymone McCaskill, 27, of Woodbridge, Virginia were rushed to WakeMed with serious injuries.

According to the SHP accident report, the Honda was traveling at approximately 55 mph when it struck the tree. There were 302 feet of tire impressions prior to the point of impact.

Ahmed was wearing a seat belt, however Freeman and McCaskill were not, the report stated.

A blood sample was taken from Ahmed as evidence for the DWI charge. The report did not state if the alleged impairment was alcohol, drugs, or a combination of both.
