Driver, Child Seriously Injured In Crash

A woman and child were seriously injured following a single vehicle accident at 5:50pm Thursday on the westbound on ramp of the US 70 Bypass in Clayton.

Emergency crews arrived to find a green car overturned on its side up an embankment resting against a tree. A 31 year-old female driver had been partially ejected and was pinned under the vehicle.  Clayton Fire crews used rescue jacks and air bags to lift the car off the victim. A 5 year-old child was in his car seat but was not properly restrained. The child was trapped inside the rear of the car and was quickly removed.

Fire crews were able to safely remove the victim from underneath the car in less than 20 minutes.  Both the woman and child were rushed to Wake Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries.   Authorities did not disclose the relationship between the woman and child.

The NC Highway Patrol said alcohol may have been a contributing factor and that charges are pending.  Photos by John Payne
