SELMA – A Downtown Selma business suffered extensive damage after a car plowed into the building.

It happened July 4 around 9:07am. A Selma police officer on routine patrol attempted to stop a 2010 Hyundai Elantra for speeding 45 mph in a 25 mph zone on S. Raiford Street.

The officer caught up with the vehicle but the driver refused to pull over for a traffic stop. The vehicle approached the railroad tracks near S. Webb Street and E. Railroad Street at such a high speed the car went airborne. The vehicle turned and the officer lost sight of the car.

Moments later the car crashed into the Surf & Turf at 115 E. Anderson Street. Fortunately, the business was closed for the July 4th holiday and no one was inside.

Police and first responders did not find anyone inside the wrecked vehicle. During a search of the business, police said they found the driver in a back room hiding behind several tires.

Tyrone Antwan Jones, age 37, of James Street, Durham, NC was arrested. His charges include felony fleeing to elude arrest, reckless driving, speeding, hit and run, injury to property, no insurance, and failure to stop at a stop sign.

Damage to the building and contents was estimated at $145,000. Damage to a Town of Selma utility pole and equipment was placed at $20,000.

  1. Jones, you are a POS! That is where I go all the way from Clayton to get my equipment serviced and not to mention who you could have killed on the sidewalk or in the store. Thank God you did not accomplish either. This was the man’s business, his living as well as all the employees he had. These are probably some of the nicest people in Selma and you have to destroy all their lives. ROT IN HE$@ you animal!!!!!

    • Chill Steven. Your rage has turn your education into mush. I don’t think you understand the word accomplish as well.

    • Driver had no insurance, but the business does. Whether it covers a car driving through the front door, who knows, unless he has Farmer’s Insurance. They’ve seen this before. “Bom de bom bom bom bom bom”.
Oh, and chill out. I used to go to Surf n’ Turf for my Kubota tractor parts, and there’s a shop on Hwy 401, east of Garner, across from Tire Warehouse that sells the same parts/service.
