Driver Found Dead In I-40 Crash

The State Highway Patrol and Johnston County Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating a crash on Interstate 40 in Johnston County this morning.  The single vehicle accident was reported at 7:13am in the eastbound lane near the 317 mile marker.

Trooper B.N. Barefoot said a pickup truck was traveling eastbound when the driver gradually went off the roadway to the right and collided head on with a tree.  The 52 year-old male driver was pronounced dead at the scene.  He was wearing a seat belt. Speed and alcohol were not contributing factors.

Trooper Barefoot said a possible medical condition has not been ruled out as the cause.

The deceased person’s next of kin has been notified but their name has not been publicly released.
