BENSON – A 65 year-old man died in a single vehicle accident discovered around 8:00am Sunday. The accident happened on Godwin Lake Road in the Meadow community in southern Johnston County.
Troopers said Preston Cherry of Robersonville, NC, in Martin County, was traveling eastbound in a black 2004 Honda Pilot when he ran off the road to the right in a curve, traveled through a field and small patch of trees and bushes, before returning to the roadway. The vehicle then crossed the centerline and ran off the road on the left, overturning in a wooded area on the drivers side.
Mr. Cherry was the only occupant and died at the scene. Authorities said he was wearing a seat belt. Troopers are looking into whether speed may have been a contributing factor.
First responders said the engine on the overturned vehicle was cold when they arrived. Officials are trying to determine when the fatal crash may have occurred.
