Driver Injured In Highway 70 Crash Dies

CLAYTON – A 32 year-old man who was badly injured in a single vehicle accident March 3rd on Highway 70 in Johnston County died from his injuries. Jakwon Montez Hawkins of Durham died March 5th in the hospital.

Hawkins was traveling on the Highway 70 Clayton Bypass at the Highway 70 Business Interchange when his vehicle skidded off the roadway and overturned in the woodline. He had to be extricated from the overturned vehicle before being airlifted from the scene by a Duke LifeFlight helicopter.

A witness reported Hawkins was driving erratically in the eastbound lanes moments before the crash and had nearly struck a parked vehicle on the shoulder.

Possible impairment and speed may have contributed to the fatal accident. The State Highway Patrol investigated.
