The State Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of a single vehicle accident Wednesday afternoon that left one person dead. The accident was reported just after 2:00pm on Highway 421 near Bud Johnson Road in northern Sampson County.
Sampson County EMS and the Herring Fire Department arrived on the scene to find a vehicle overturned. The driver died at the scene.
The vehicle reportedly ran off the roadway, struck a fence, then the porch of a home before overturning on its side in the edge of a field.
The accident caused traffic delays for several hours on Highway 421 until the scene was cleared.
