Update: Driver, Baby Killed In Collision With Dump Truck

UPDATE April 4: A 2 month-old baby injured in the accident died Saturday, April 3rd at WakeMed.

UPDATE April 2: The victim has been identified as 23 year-old Virginia Guadalupe Reyes of Goldsboro. A baby in the car was critically injured.

SELMA – The State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal collision this afternoon (Friday) involving a dump truck and passenger car. The collision was reported around 1:15PM on Highway 42 East at Thanksgiving Fire Road.

Initial reports indicate the driver of a Toyota Camry, traveling north on Thanksgiving Fire Road, failed to yield to a Peterbilt dump truck traveling eastbound on Highway 42. The dump truck struck the driver’s side of the Toyota which came to rest just off the roadway at the intersection. The dump truck continued a short distance eastbound before running off the roadway on the left and coming to rest in a group of trees.

There were two occupants in the passenger car, the driver and a small child. The driver died at the scene. The small child was rushed to the hospital with unknown injuries. The driver of the dump truck sustained non-life threatening injuries.

The Thanksgiving Fire Department, Archer Lodge Fire Department, Johnston County EMS, Johnston County Coroner, State Highway Patrol and NC Department of Transportation have responded to the scene.

Traffic is being detoured off Highway 42 until the scene can be cleared. The roadway is expected to be reopened by 4:30PM this afternoon.
