One person is dead following a fiery crash in southern Johnston County.
The wreck was reported at 4:09 AM Wednesday on Interstate 40 at the 328 mile marker near Benson.
According to a preliminary investigation, 20 year-old Vivian Coral Bass of Timer Lake Drive NW, Wilson was headed eastbound in a 2008 Toyota passenger car when she traveled onto the eastbound shoulder and struck a guard rail. After the impact the car burst into flames. As a result of the collision Bass was killed.
Highway Patrol Sgt. Michael Baker said troopers have not determined why Bass left the roadway or possible contributing factors to the crash. Due to the vehicle being burned, officials may never know. The speed limit on that portion of I-40 was 70 MPH.
The accident marks the seventh fatality on Johnston County roadways this year and the second this month. On March 14th, a 38 year-old Middlesex woman died when her truck overturned and partially submerged in a creek on Friendship Church Road near the Johnston-Nash County line.
