SMITHFIELD – The Market Street underpass claimed another victim, Tuesday evening, when an out-of-state driver bypassed the blocking Smithfield fire truck and drove into the deep water, under the railroad overpass, near Brightleaf Boulevard.

The driver was quickly rescued. The car was completely flooded and pulled out of the water by a local towing company.

Despite the many cones, emergency vehicles, and high water, numerous drivers attempted to go around the blockades and use the closed roadway. Only one actually drove into the flood waters.

  1. Well I guess they got what they deserved. There’s something seriously wrong with people, I am so frequently amazed with the ignorance and wanton disregard that people display on the road. They act like their time is so much more important than yours.

  2. Forest Gump said this : “Moma says that stupid is as stupid does” I’m just glad the shmuck did not drown.

  3. People that drive around emergency equipment that have blocked traffic or drove around the road close signs should not be rescued. This is a preventable incident and should not risk the likes of responders to rescue these people for their inconsideration of common-sense safety.

  4. Row Row Row your car gently down the underpass, merrily merrily watch me float away, life is just a dream 🙂
