Driver Traveling 60 MPH In Reverse Says He Couldn’t Stop Car

A Smithfield man is facing charges after a car he was driving in reverse at an estimated 60 miles per hour slammed into an SUV on Highway 301 South in Smithfield Thursday morning.

According to an accident report released Friday by Smithfield Police, 26 year-old Michel Lee Parsons of Smithfield said he had just finished working on a 2009 Chevy Impala. He claims the Impala got stuck in reverse and he couldn’t stop it.  While traveling southbound on Highway 301 at E. Underwood Avenue, police said Parson crossed the centerline and struck a northbound 2008 Chevy Tahoe driven by Angela Johnson Lewis, 49, of Kenly.

Police estimated Lewis was traveling at 45mph at the time of the collision and Parsons was traveling at 60mph.  The speed limit is 45mph.

Lewis and a juvenile passenger in her Tahoe was transported to Johnston Medical Center in Smithfield.  Parsons and one passenger in the Impala, Austin Brian Mitchell, 18, of Havelock, NC was transported to Wake Med.  A second passenger in the Impala, Richard Gray Saccucci, 21, of Smithfield was injured but was not transported by ambulance, according to the accident report.

Police said they plan to charge Parsons with reckless driving and driving on a revoked license. Photos
