Drivers Killed In Head On Collision

Two people have died as the result of a head on collision in southern Johnston County.

The crash happened at 5:37pm Friday on Highway 55 about a half mile west of Highway 96 near the Johnston-Sampson County line.

A 1998 Chevy SUV driven by George Rouse, 35, of Wilmington was traveling eastbound when his vehicle crossed the centerline and slammed head on into a westbound 2009 Ford car operated by Reynolds Obriant, 51, of Winston Salem.

Rouse died at the scene as a result of his injuries.  Obriant was airlifted from the scene but died on Saturday as a result of his injuries. A small dog in Obriant’s vehicle also perished.  Both drivers were wearing seat belts.

First Sgt. D.L. Mobley said speed and alcohol are not believed to be contributing factors, however troopers are still trying to determine why Rouse crossed the centerline.   Photos by John Payne
