Prison officials at Johnston Correctional on US 70 near Smithfield said someone tossed a bag of drugs over a barbed wire fence.
The incident was reported around 5:20pm Monday.
An alert prison guard walking outside the facility spotted a woman toss a bag over the security fence and then run away. Guards retrieved the bag inside the prison grounds and discovered 6 grams of marijuana inside. Officials believe the drugs were meant for a prisoner.
The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
