Drunk Driver Collides Head On With Sheriff’s Deputy

A Wake County sheriff’s deputy is recovering from minor injuries after his patrol car was struck head-on Friday morning.

The Highway Patrol says Deputy Joseph Samuel Coley, 44, was traveling west on Poole Road, near the intersection with Grasshopper Road, around 6:12am in an attempt to locate an earlier report of a disabled vehicle or a possible motor vehicle accident in the area.

The officer observed a Kia Sedona minivan traveling east. As the two vehicles approached, the minivan cross the centerline. The deputy quickly slowed down, activated his blue lights and attempted to moved to the far right to avoid the head on collision. However, the Kia continued traveling in the wrong lane and struck the deputy’s 2012 Dodge Charger.

The driver of the minivan, Carlos Alberto Moya, 56, of Fountain Drive, Raleigh was taken to Wake Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries.

Moya has been charged with driving while impaired, driving left of center, failure to wear a seat belt, and failing to comply with a driver’s license restriction, according to Lt. Jeff Gordon with the NC Highway Patrol.
