DUNN – A Harnett County Grand Jury returned a true bill of indictment against a Dunn man and woman blamed in the methamphetamine overdose death of the woman’s 22-month-old daughter in April 2023.

Brielle Hall, seen here, was 22 months old when she died April 14, 2023.

The jury’s December action noted prosecutors have enough evidence to show probable cause in the case against Jasmine Zhane Snead, 30, and Jauon Malik McKoy, 31. Snead and McKoy, both of 32 Bear Lane, are each charged with involuntary manslaughter and negligent child abuse.

Twenty-two-month-old Brielle Hall was unresponsive and receiving CPR when Harnett deputies arrived at her home on April 9, 2023. Paramedics rushed her to a hospital for treatment. The infant died five days later on April 14.

“An autopsy and toxicology screening were conducted in order to determine a cause of death,” Harnett County Sheriff Wayne Coats said in a release on Nov. 19. “On November 8, 2024 the autopsy and toxicology reports were received and it was determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner that the cause of death was due to methamphetamine toxicity.”

Based upon the medical examiner’s report, Sheriff’s Lt. Stephen Elmore applied for and was issued a warrant for arrest on Snead and McKoy on Nov. 12. Both defendants were arrested and ordered held in the Harnett County Detention Center under $500,000 secured bonds.

In a first appearance hearing on Nov. 19, attorney Jesse W. Jones was appointed by Judge Resson O. Faircloth II as Snead’s defense counsel. A probable cause hearing scheduled for Dec. 17 was reset by the court to Jan. 20.

In a first appearance hearing on Nov. 21, Judge Jason Harold Stone appointed attorney Matthew Stone to represent McKoy. A probable cause hearing scheduled for Dec. 10 was reset by the court to Jan. 20.

Bond for Snead and McKoy remains the same pending their next hearings.
