A Raleigh man is facing numerous charges following a chase Thursday night. Around 10 PM, a Johnston County deputy responded to a report of an impaired driver on Highway 42 near Highway 50. When the officer arrived at the intersection he spotted the vehicle leaving a convenience store parking lot and attempted to conduct a traffic stop.
Instead of stopping the driver reportedly accelerated onto Highway 42 crossing the centerline several times and nearby striking an oncoming SUV, authorities said. The fleeing driver then turned into a mobile home park where he jumped and ran from his pickup.
Paul Richard Simpson, 51, was captured a short distance away.
Simpson was charged with felony fleeing to elude arrest, driving while impaired, failure to stop at a stop sign, reckless driving, and driving on a revoked license. Simpson refused to submit to a breathalyzer test.
Deputies said the chase never reached speeds above 60 MPH. Officers seized the Chevy S-10 truck Simpson was allegedly operating.
Simpson was given a $20,000 bond.
