SMITHFIELD – One person was killed and another seriously hurt in a Memorial Day traffic accident in Johnston County. The single vehicle accident was reported at 2:33am Monday on Interstate 95 near Smithfield.

The State Highway Patrol said Bob Lewis Sherman of Pennsylvania was operating a Chevrolet Malibu northbound when he ran off the interstate to the right and collided with two trees at a high rate of speed.
Sherman and a passenger, Antone William Hampton Jr., also of Pennsylvania, were severely pinned inside the Malibu. Smithfield Fire carefully extricated both occupants.
Sherman was transported to WakeMed with serious injuries. Hampton died at the scene.
The Highway Patrol patrol said Sherman was wearing a seat belt but Hampton was not restrained.
No others vehicles were involved in the early morning accident.
Charges are pending.
