An elderly man died in a the parking lot of a business Friday morning in what a friend of the victim described as a “freak accident.”
Around 7:20 AM, 75 year-old Glen Messer had stopped to return a piece of equipment he had borrowed from Yow’s Repairs and Parts, also known as Yow’s Towing, on McDougald Road just outside of Lillington.
Harnett County Sheriff Wayne Coats said as the victim was getting out of his car, he was struck by a tractor trailer making a turn into the yard. Sheriff Coats described Messer as a “pillar of the community.”
Distraught family members gathered at the scene following the accident.
