A weekend house fire claimed the life of a 79 year-old man.
A postal carrier spotted flames coming from a home at 120 Weathervane Road near Pikeville around 12:13pm Saturday and called 911.
The Nahunta, Pikeville-Pleasant Grove and Little River Volunteer Fire Departments responded and found a two story home on fire near the garage area.
After extinguishing the blaze, firefighters found the body of 79 year-old Landis Jones in the first floor bathroom. Jones lived at the address.
On Sunday, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office said the fire had been ruled accidental. The exact cause was not released.
The NC SBI and Wayne County Office of Emergency Services was called to the scene Saturday afternoon to assist with the investigation.
