SMITHFIELD – A motorcyclist was killed in a collision with a Jeep SUV on N. Brightleaf Boulevard at the entrance to Walmart. The crash was reported around 10:49am today (Friday).
Initial reports indicate a Smithfield police officer was running radar in the area of Durwood Stephenson Parkway near N. Brightleaf Boulevard and clocked a motorcycle traveling at a high rate of speed. The officer followed to conduct a traffic stop but immediately lost sight of the motorcycle.
Moments later, the motorcyclist struck the passenger side of a white Jeep turning from Brightleaf Boulevard into the Walmart parking lot. The male victim was ejected and died at the scene. One person in the Jeep was transported to the hospital for treatment.
Authorities said the Smithfield police officer was not pursuing the motorcycle when it crashed.
Brightleaf Boulevard was closed in both directions for nearly two hours before the scene was cleared.
The Smithfield Police Department requested the State Highway Patrol investigate the crash. The names of those involved have not yet been released.
The accident marks the second fatal motorcycle wreck in the Smithfield city limits this month.

I was on 301 and saw the motorcyclist when he turned onto 301. He was traveling very fast and didn’t stop at the light.. There was a policeman in an SUV that came up to 301 with his blue lights on shortly after the motorcyclist turned, but as soon as he (the officer) turned onto 301, he turned his lights off. The motorcyclist had sped up even more once he got onto 301 and then unfortunately hit the car turning into Walmart. I was third car back but had an RV in front of me. I didn’t see the impact,but I saw the motorcyclist go down. My heart sank and we prayed for him. So very sorry.
