A 15 year-old juvenile driver and his father were both badly injured in a single vehicle accident Saturday afternoon near Clayton. It took emergency crews an extended period of time using hydraulic tools, including the Jaws of Life, to remove the two from the mangled cab of a pickup.
The Highway Patrol said the juvenile was traveling westbound on Highway 42 near Government Road at 12:36pm when he ran off the roadway and collided with a tree.
The juvenile sustained two broken femurs. His father, Ronald N. Gering Jr., 42, of Clayton sustained serious internal injuries.
Troopers said the juvenile was traveling at 50 mph in a 55 mph at the time of the crash and that alcohol was not a factor. The truck left 159 feet of skid marks before striking the tree.
As of Monday, both remained at Wake Medical Center.
Investigating Trooper D.T. Sharpe did not file any charges.
