SMITHFIELD – A chance meeting at a Smithfield convenience store resulted in a verbal altercation that escalated to a fight.
The incident happened around 12:20am this morning (Friday) at the Speedway, at 2103 S. Brightleaf Boulevard.
Smithfield Police said two men, who knew one another, happened to be in the convenience store at the same time. The men reportedly began arguing over a woman, and the argument turned physical.
During the affray, a glass door to the business was shattered.
Police arrived and cited Demorris Tyree Meeks, age 35, of Goldsboro with injury to property and simple affray. He was given a citation and released at the scene pending a court appearance.
The other suspect had fled before officers arrived. Once located the second man will face the same charges.
