Fire Causes $1.5 Million In Damage At Byrd’s Wholesale

The Johnston County Fire Marshal’s Office announced Friday afternoon they have not been able to determine what started a massive fire Thursday night at Byrd’s Wholesale on Highway 70 Business west of Smithfield.

The fire was reported shortly before 8:00PM at the business which manufactures storage sheds.

Six fire departments responded to the scene.   Highway 70 was closed in both directions due to a large fire hose stretched across east and westbound lanes.

Fire Marshal Adam Stanley told WTSB News the fire has been ruled as undetermined.  Stanley said investigators were unable to pinpoint the exact cause.

Damage estimates are in excess of $1.5 million.

No injuries were reported.
