Smithfield Native Honored for Work

The Town of Garner and PEG Media Partners earlier this month won a national Award of Excellence from the City-County Communications and Marketing Association for “Inside the Garner Fire Department,” a 30-minute documentary that offers a behind-the-scenes look at Garner Volunteer Fire-Rescue. The award category was one-time special programming for jurisdictions with population 55,000 or under.

“Inside the Garner Fire Department” was filmed, directed and edited by PEG Media Partners’ Adam Carroll. Carroll, a Smithfield native, graduated in 2006 from Smithfield Selma High and in 2010 from NC State University with a degree in Communications.  He previously earned statewide honors for his work on Mayor Ronnie Williams’ “Great People in Garner,” a documentary on the Garner Police Department and Garner’s All-America City video featuring Scotty McCreery.

“Throughout the taping, Adam settled for nothing short of perfection from himself while helping our members understand the importance of simply doing our work and ignoring the cameras,” Garner Fire Battalion Chief Barrett Penny said. “The product was a film that has been valuable in educating our community on what a day in the life of a Garner firefighter is like.”

“Adam is dedicated to his craft and to telling good stories—plus, he’s just ridiculously talented,” said Town of Garner Communications Manager Rick Mercier. “I wish I had more people at my disposal who are as good as he is.”

PEG Media Partners is a nonprofit corporation that provides video content and operations to Garner and other municipalities in eastern Wake County and Johnston County. Carroll works with Mercier to produce content for the Town’s GTV11 channel (11 on Time Warner Cable, 99 on AT&T U-verse and on demand at youtube.com/townofgarner).

“PEG Media Partners—and, in particular, Adam—are an essential reason why we’ve been able to create so many communications products at such a high level in recent years,” Mercier said.

Since 2011, the Town has won 16 awards at the statewide and national levels for a large variety of broadcast, print, electronic and social media products.

“There aren’t many municipal communications units in the state—and probably none our size—that have had the kind of success we’ve had in recent years,” Mercier said. “A big reason is our innovative relationship with PEG Media Partners. Another major reason is the great collaboration across all of our Town departments and with key service partners such as Garner Volunteer Fire-Rescue.”

“Inside the Garner Fire Department” airs regularly on GTV11.
