PRINCETON – Fire trucks lined the road on US 70 just inside Wayne County on Thursday evening, as firefighters fought to control a huge blaze at “Karen and Mickey’s Oakwood Firewood.”

Dozens of firefighters from Oakland, Little River and Princeton Fire Departments extinguished the flames but not before the fire destroyed the large pole-barn and all of its contents.

The owner, Mickey Phillips, said that he and his wife had just taken a break for dinner to celebrate their 33rd wedding anniversary in Smithfield when they received a call telling them their building was on fire.

The family owned business was well known for supplying oak firewood to local customers. Karen Phillips also made and sold Christmas decorations each year.

Philips said that they had been working on decorations for this year for several months, “But, they are all gone, now.”

The Phillips had no insurance to cover their loses but thanked firefighters for the efforts to save what they could.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
